Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries leader Prophet Walter Magaya’s wife, Tendai, has lost her vehicle, a Landrover Discovery 4 valued at $116 000, which was seized by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority on allegations of evading duty.
The vehicle had been donated to Mrs Magaya by Admire Mango, a senior overseer at PHD Ministries for Chitungwiza area.
Mango bought the car through a local car dealer, Upenyu Prosper Mashangwa (35), the managing director of Oceane Perfumes.
Mashangwa allegedly evaded duty by manufacturing documents for the vehicle despite being given the full amount to import the car from South Africa as well as pay the duty.
Mashangwa on Friday appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with fraud.
He was granted $300 bail coupled with stringent conditions, among them surrendering his passport and to report once a week to the police.
Mr Mahwe remanded him to April 30. Prosecutor Miss Sharon Mashavira alleged that on July 15 last year, Mango offered to acquire a vehicle for Mrs Magaya.
He was referred to Mashangwa by a Gilbert Mafusire.
Mango and Mashangwa allegedly entered a verbal agreement that he would import the 2014 model vehicle from South Africa and deliver it by August 22 last year.
It is the State’s case that Mashangwa was given $80 000 which he said was enough to import the vehicle.
Mashangwa imported the vehicle on September 15 last year and asked Mango for $36 000 which he said was for duty and registration.
Instead of paying the prescribed duty, Mashangwa, it is alleged, forged the customs clearance certificate and manufactured a vehicle registry book.
He misrepresented facts to ZIMRA and the organisation acted upon the misrepresentation and made him to pay $900 only for duty.
The vehicle was fraudulently registered with the Central Vehicle Registry.
The anomalies were discovered by ZIMRA on March 13 this year, prompting the seizure of the vehicle and prejudice to Mrs Magaya. Herald
