Police have warned of a blue-light gang masquerading as cops and stalking Durban suburbs. Among their crime repertoire, according to police, is hijacking and armed robbery. Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the bogus officers were being sought.
“It has come to the attention of this office that there is a motor vehicle, a white Toyota Avanza, driving around in KwaMashu, Newlands East and in Greenwood Park areas robbing community members.”
“The occupants are three African males and while they do not use police uniform, they use a car that is fitted with a police blue light and they also pretend to be members of the Saps. They use a blue light to stop unsuspecting motorists and rob them,” Zwane said.
“On Sunday, they used a blue light to stop a VW Golf in Ramchand Road in the Greenwood Park area and threatened the two victims with a firearm. They removed his vehicle keys from the ignition and bundled the two victims into their Toyota Avanza.”
“They dropped the victims off at the corner of Nandi Drive and Dumisani Makhaye Drive and drove away with the victim’s vehicle after robbing them of their cell phones as well. The victims believed they were members of Saps. This case is being investigated by Saps Greenwood Park detectives and no arrest has been made as yet,” he said.
Zwane appealed for anyone with information regarding the fake policemen to come forward.
“We would like to encourage community members to be careful of this vehicle and to report same to the police if seen in the area. These suspects are armed and dangerous and members of the community should be cautious at all times,” he said.
