“When Zebras go to church” A book review of “Why Should I go to Church?” Apostle P. Sibiya

“When Zebras go to church” A book review of  “Why Should I go to Church?” By Vengayi Zano

The movement that Jesus founded some two millennia ago and christened “Church” has never ceased to steal the limelight of the media much to the chagrin of attention-seeking politicians. With the rise of the social media especially made easy with the accessibility that smart phones offer, even King Solomon in all his glory turns in his grave as he envies having been denied the chance to live in these ever exciting times.

From the designer label of the preachers tuxedo, to the promises of the land of Beverly Hills flowing with cars and honey, if only you part with your dough, not forgetting the now common scandalous clergymen’s sexual shenanigans, and miracle money and anointing oil, it seems that today’s church is never short of hot cakes to sell and those in the Fourth Estate are having a field day daily. With everything and everyone gravitating towards the hyped church one wonders why a man should write a book titled “Why Should I go to Church?” Yet Apostle Pride Sibiya has done just that.

You can imagine the dryness that invaded my oral cavity when I received an invitation to review the book. Wasn’t everyone going to church nowadays including pole dancing strippers? Today’s church is now a dazzling organization adorned with all the pomp typical of a gathering of celebrities for some award-giving ceremony. Who wouldn’t want to be there? Under the mesmerizing spell of the rags-to-riches rhetoric of its youthful clergymen who are endowed with the oratorical prowess reminiscence of the Hitlerism era, coupled with a display of eye-popping supernatural activities, who exactly, among the billions of earthlings, cannot be wooed into the God-backed prosperity-bound bandwagon.
The good Reverend, Oudney Patsika, who handed me a copy of the book for the book review told me that “Why Should I go to Church?” had among its many intentions to dispel the corpus of myths about church. That made sense, a lot of it, because, as I have written elsewhere, one of the reasons why there is a massive exodus into the church is that the rise of clerical charlatans and their counterfeit church have propagated the myth that church and kindergarten are synonymous. So perhaps someone should correct the misrepresentation of the charlatans and their phony church by querying the motive for going to church.

But what about the book design, a herd of Zebras, has to do with going to church? Could it be a mysterious spiritual stunt or perhaps the man of the cloth was now on a “Save the Zebra” environmental campaign? The book design according to my judgement was inappropriate. What in the world had Zebras to do with going to church? Before I could voice my concerns the good Reverend, said to me, “Zebras team up to ward off the enemy.” I told him to expect my first instalment of the book review within a week because his statement proved beyond reasonable doubt that Zebras had everything to do with answering the question “Why should I go to church?”

I grew up in a family that idolised wildlife for the simple reason that my father was a sculptor of wildlife. Zebras were among many of his prized gallery collections. Zebras are fascinating animals, not only because of their amazing black and white colour stripes but their defence mechanism which confuses and fends off predators notably lions. Zebras are a congregated lot. They always assemble together. They have come to understand the power of coming together.

When Zebras are together it’s highly unlikely that such a gathering would escape a lion’s notice yet as a group with each Zebra’s stripes blending in with the stripes of the Zebras around it, this confuses the lions who see a large, moving striped mass instead of many individual Zebras. The lion has trouble picking out any one Zebra and so it lacks any good plan of attack. The lion’s inability to distinguish Zebras also makes it more difficult for it to target and track weaker Zebras in the herd. On occasion Zebras ward off attackers by coming together in a defensive rear-guard position. From this position Zebras will kick any predator that comes within range.

The Zebra picture design on “Why Should I go to Church?” then, is not simply a book beautification strategy but a well thought analogue by Apostle Sibiya. The Zebra book design provides a colourful presentation before you even open the book of why it is important for believers to go to church. Properly understood, the Church is the only safe haven from the predatory machinations of the devil whom Scripture aptly describes in one instance as a prowling lion on the loss seeking a prey to devoir. Regardless of the rise of the phony church, or the phony attendees of the genuine church or any taint marring the image of Jesus’ institution, Apostle Sibiya argues in his masterpiece through the Zebra illustration that the only way believers will ward off the fiery attacks of the fallen angel is going to church.
