“When Zebras go to church” A book review of “Why Should I go to Church?” By Vengayi Zano
The movement that Jesus founded some two millennia ago and christened “Church” has never ceased to steal the limelight of the media much to the chagrin of attention-seeking politicians. With the rise of the social media especially made easy with the accessibility that smart phones offer, even King Solomon in all his glory turns in his grave as he envies having been denied the chance to live in these ever exciting times. From the designer label of the preachers tuxedo, to the promises of the land of Beverly Hills flowing with cars and honey, if only you part with your dough, not forgetting the now common scandalous clergymen’s sexual shenanigans, and miracle money and anointing oil, it seems that today’s church is never short of hot cakes to sell and those in the Fourth Estate are having a field day daily. With everything and everyone gravitating towards the hyped church one wonders why a man should write a book titled “Why Should I go to Church?” Yet Apostle Pride Sibiya has done just that.

The good Reverend, Oudney Patsika, who handed me a copy of the book for the book review told me that “Why Should I go to Church?” had among its many intentions to dispel the corpus of myths about church. That made sense, a lot of it, because, as I have written elsewhere, one of the reasons why there is a massive exodus into the church is that the rise of clerical charlatans and their counterfeit church have propagated the myth that church and kindergarten are synonymous. So perhaps someone should correct the misrepresentation of the charlatans and their phony church by querying the motive for going to church.
But what about the book design, a herd of Zebras, has to do with going to church? Could it be a mysterious spiritual stunt or perhaps the man of the cloth was now on a “Save the Zebra” environmental campaign? The book design according to my judgement was inappropriate. What in the world had Zebras to do with going to church? Before I could voice my concerns the good Reverend, said to me, “Zebras team up to ward off the enemy.” I told him to expect my first instalment of the book review within a week because his statement proved beyond reasonable doubt that Zebras had everything to do with answering the question “Why should I go to church?”

When Zebras are together it’s highly unlikely that such a gathering would escape a lion’s notice yet as a group with each Zebra’s stripes blending in with the stripes of the Zebras around it, this confuses the lions who see a large, moving striped mass instead of many individual Zebras. The lion has trouble picking out any one Zebra and so it lacks any good plan of attack. The lion’s inability to distinguish Zebras also makes it more difficult for it to target and track weaker Zebras in the herd. On occasion Zebras ward off attackers by coming together in a defensive rear-guard position. From this position Zebras will kick any predator that comes within range.
