A man in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh has divorced his wife months after she filed an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act in August last year to know her husband's caste.
The woman filed the application after she failed to get the information from the government department where her husband works. The woman believed her husband of 15 years was a "low-caste Muslim''. She feared his husband's background could affect the future of her two children.

Usman said he counselled the couple besides involving their families to settle the dispute. "The husband had a different story to share...'' he said. He said the man's refusal to throw his sister out of their house had led to the woman leaving him. "He was giving half his salary to his wife while she lived in her parent's house." The only condition under which the woman was ready to live with her husband was that he should transfer his property in her name.
