West Indies beat India by five wickets to win their first-ever Under-19 World Cup title. Chasing 146 for a win in the final in Mirpur, the Windies got as many runs in 49.3 overs. Though it must be said that they looked in control of the chase at most times of the second innings, considering that there were not many runs on the board.
For the victors, Keacy Carty got the highest score of 52 not out. Playing a support actor was Keemo Paul, who made 40 not out. For India, Mayank Dagar got three wickets.
Earlier, put into bat, India were shot out for 145 in 45.1 overs. The three-time champions looked a shadow of their usual selves as wickets continued to tumble regularly. Sarfaraz Khan, who made 51, was the top scorer of the innings. For West Indies, Alzarri Joseph and Ryan John bagged three wickets each.
The fact that India could not even bat 50 overs was always going to be a major talking point at the end of the first innings. But they also had a slowish run rate, something that did not help their cause.
We will have to wait and see how this win helps Windies cricket, which has suffered for long at the senior level. But there is little doubt about the fact that they were deserved winners, standing up bravely in the final.
