Your mum is meant to be the person who always protects you – but for one young woman, it didn’t happen that way.
Chelsea Hopper, 22, naturally confided in her mum when her relationship turned violent, hoping that she could help her put distance between her family and the abuse.
But instead of cutting off Kevin Scott, 35, her mum slept with him behind her daughter’s back.

She had gone back to Kevin, believing he might be capable of changing. But then she saw the sickening messages sent when she was trying to get over him.

‘But to find out he was my mother’s secret lover was just too much to take.. I never want anything to do with either of them ever again.’
Support worker Chelsea had met Kevin in August 2014 when she was working in a pub. They moved into a flat in Scunthorpe, Linconshire, in February last year and the relationship started well.
Chelsea said: ‘He was always very charming. I really thought I would end up marrying him one day.’
He was older but she needn’t have worried her parents would disapprove as her mum told told it was okay as long as she was happy.

‘If I wanted to go out with friends he would smash things up and throw things at me like phones and TV remotes,’ she said. ‘Sometimes he would attack me physically. I seemed to have an almost constant black eye.
‘He would call me names and say I was worthless. Whenever I cried he would shout ‘Stop it or I’ll give you something to cry about’!’
She moved back with her parents but although her dad was angry with what happened, her mum would defend Kevin, telling her ‘I bet he didn’t mean to do it, he loves you’, Chelsea said.
Her mum even offered to go around and talk to Kevin for her.

‘They were all dirty messages from my mum telling Kevin how good he was in bed. I felt sick…I was hysterical,’ she said.
‘I went to my mum’s and shouted ‘You’ve been f** my boyfriend! How could you do this to me?
‘She denied it and managed to convince my dad that I was wrong.
‘I felt suicidal and locked myself in the bathroom with a bottle of pills. Thankfully my friend arrived and got me out of there.’
She left him but Kevin managed to convince her to go back yet again. But she said: ‘Sometimes I would come home and my mum would be there.‘Dad said she would disappear or he would wake up in the early hours and she wasn’t there.’ When Chelsea caught Kevin in bed with another woman just before Christmas, that was the last straw.
‘Two days after Christmas I walked out for the last time and drove to a pub to hand Kevin the flat keys. He ended up dragging me out of my car.’
Kevin launched the keys at Chelsea’s face, leaving her with a bruised and bloody eye.
Chelsea is now in a new relationship and is finally with a man she loves and trusts but she said the pain of her mum’s betrayal – and the heartache it caused her dad, 47 – goes on.
‘I begged [dad] to leave Mum, but they have been together 27 years. I think he’s worried he’d struggle without her,’ she said.
Her mum admitted it
Housewife Jacqueline admitted she slept with Kevin, but said: ‘There wasn’t a relationship – I slept with him three times. It was for a bit of attention, because me and my partner don’t have sex.
‘The first time was when they had split up. Then she went back to him. Then there was another break in the relationship and it happened again.
‘Chelsea thinks I’ve been with him loads of times, but it was three times.
‘It was ten minutes – I don’t think we even spoke. I know it was wrong and I regret it. I don’t know what made me do it, I really don’t.’
Kevin tried to play down the assault on Chelsea – saying he was ‘only guilty of throwing keys at her’.
He claimed: ‘I have not had sex with [Jacqueline] and she has never been to my property as I would never let her in.’
He was found guilty of assault by beating on April 6 and placed under a restraining order by Scunthorpe magistrates.
He must carry out 140 hours unpaid work, pay £660 court costs and give Chelsea £100 compensation.
