Robert Mugabe Realised It Was 'Time To Go' When He Saw Celebrations In Streets

Indemnity for former president Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace was not part of any discussions with the military ahead of his resignation last week, according to Zimbabwe’s top Jesuit, Fr Fidelis Mukonori.

Fr Mukonori, a close friend and ally of Mr Mugabe, 93, for more then 40 years, spent up to 18 hours a day in discussions with him before “the old man” let it be known he would quit as the impeachment process began in Zimbabwe’s parliament last Tuesday.

“He had hoped to stay on until the Zanu-PF congress next month,” Father Fidelis told The Telegraph on Sunday, but he had decided, when he saw celebrations in the streets after the military took over that it was “time to go.”
