Business in Cameroon - The European Union (EU) is concerned about the continuing unrest in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions as the 2018 presidential elections approach.
“The acute and persistent violence in Cameroon’s North-West and South-West regions remains a serious concern, especially for the presidential elections of October 7,” the union said September 13 during the 39th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
It strongly condemns “any use of violence against civilians and States representatives,” and calls authorities to protect the population, stressing that the use of force by State agents must be proportionate.
According to EU, a sustained solution to this crisis can only be achieved through dialog whereby all concerned parties are constructively committed. It suggests that the Cameroonian government and armed groups grant unimpeded access to humanitarian actors in need of “impartial and thorough investigations into alleged human rights violations and actual human rights violations".
In conclusion, the European Union committed to support all efforts directed towards a peaceful solution to the conflict that has been ongoing since October 2016.
