Remembering Uyinene Mrwetyana On Her First Birthday Since Her Death

On Monday, Uyinene Mrwetyana would have celebrated her 20th birthday if her life had not been tragically cut short last year.

The Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation took to Twitter to celebrate the slain student's first birthday since her passing.

The post was captioned:

"Today is Uyinene’s 20th birthday - a thread. As we honour Uyinene on her first birthday since her passing, let’s use this day to celebrate her life, remember her passing, and reignite our collective battle against Gender-Based Violence."

Mrwetyana's life was tragically cut short by convicted rapist and murderer, Luyanda Botha. The post office worker was handed down three life sentences as well as an additional five years for defeating the ends of justice.

Nene, as she was fondly dubbed, had arrived at the post office only to be told to return later due to the electricity has been off.

When she had returned, the student found herself alone with her 42-year-old alleged predator.
He locked the door, assaulted and raped her. When Nene tried to scream, he took a scale inside the post office and beat her.

Botha went on to dump her body in Lingelethu West. Blood was found inside the post office and on his shoes when he was arrested.
South Africans remembered the beautiful student on her birthday and honoured her life and legacy.
