A 24-year-old man drowned in Cleveland Dam while enjoying ‘Kodak’ moments with his lover on her birthday on Africa Day.
Terrence Mupfawa of Sunningdale 2’s planned celebrations with his lover, only identified as Constance of Sunningdale, ended prematurely after he drowned into the dam while posing for photographs being taken by the latter.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the death of a 24-year-old man who drowned in Cleveland Dam on Wednesday (Africa Day),” said Chief Supt Nyathi.
“He was in the company of boys and girls celebrating a birthday party when the deceased went for a photo shoot on the dam wall where he subsequently fell into the dam.
“Passersby tried to rescue him but to no avail. His body was retrieved by the police sub aqua unit.”
However, eye witnesses told H-Metro that Terrence was under the influence of alcohol when he jumped into the dam and Constance looked helpless as she watched her fiancé drown.
Terrence hired a car from his neighbour to take Constance along with her friends for celebrations and the mishap happened before the cutting of the cake, impeccable sources told H-Metro.
“Terrence has been mischievous since the day he received his salary and today (Wednesday), he asked one of our neighbours to have a feel of his car as he celebrated with Constance,” said the source who witnessed the mishap.
“Anga adhakwa ndokuenda kunotorana mifaninidzo nemusikana wake; akumbira imwe couple yanga iri muboat kuti vamise boat so that their boat becomes a background of his picture he was posing for.
“He asked the couple to stop the boat and he jumped into the dam under the influence of alcohol and he failed to swim and drowned.
“He could have died in a road traffic accident because of the dangerous driving he was doing on the road and I suspect he was already drunk.
“Some of Constance’s friends were saying she lied to Terrence that she had her birthday so as to get presents when in actual fact her birthday is in December.
“Nyama necake vasikana vazotadza kuzvidya vakuchema, Constance abva atiza aona kuti pano paipa,” said the source.
Constance could not be reached for comment by the time of going to press.
